Softening
It seems that there is not much difference between Tozan's third and fifth phase (illumination and unity in Evelyn Underhill's terminology) when it comes to realizations. At the third phase, there is a tremendous clarity and insight, and this is not changed too much.
What is changed is the relationship to it. At phase three, we tend to see it as an achievement and special. At phase five, it is impossible to see it that way. It is so clearly not an achievement, and it is so clearly not special. At the same time, we can of course see that it may appear both as an achievement and special to others, but it is not so in our own experience.
There is a mellowing and softening here, coming from the period of fall from grace and dark night of the soul. We are now fully human, and fully Big Mind, and still deepening into both and the fluidity in it.
