The Problem with Tradition

One of the problems with traditions, is we tend to use them to create ideas and expectations. And of course, everything can be used this way.

For instance, in Zen it is not uncommon for people to imitate what they think a "Zen person" (or no-person) is supposed to act. And this may include attaching to an idea of how it looks to not attach to an idea (dismissing any form of authentic engagement in the world). They attach to an idea, instead of following what comes up for themselves. This is one form of the "stink of Zen".

At the same time, spiritual traditions are invaluable for the acumulated experiences, insights and wisdom carried forward through them, and for the invaluable support they may provide for those with sincerity and working with an experienced and mature guide.
