Flowers & Deer
For the three summers we have lived in this house, we have watched some neighbors trying to grow flowers at the edge of the yard, deer eat them, and the neighbors yell at the deer.
It is a good example of how we all tend to argue with reality, as Byron Katie says it. We believe in a thought, reality manifests differently, and we get upset. In this case, the thoughts may be that "we are entitled to grow flowers in our yard" and "deer shouldn't eat our flowers".
It is tragicomic to see these neighbors repeat this pattern over and over, especially knowing that I do the same, as do most human beings around the world. We fight reality, and suffer.
More precisely: We are blindly caught up in the habitual patterns of the small self, believe in thoughts, and suffer when life manifests differently - which it is bound to do.
